Central Texas Power Plant Lakes May & June
Thank the Lord for the rains this April Central Texas needed it! I‘ll start off with a quick tip about a company that has been around for twenty five years. I was going through my plastic worms the other day and I picked out a bag of the original Culprit worms that I have not fished in a while. I proceeded to go out and fish that day and I loaded the boat.
That brings me to the Tip. Look at some of the worms you have not fished with in a while and you too may find that extra edge you need to catch more bass.
The Culprit company has some new things that I have been fishing with like the new “Water beetle” in eighteen different colors and two different sizes, three and four inch, to choose from.
Now as for May and June on Fayette County Lake. I like to start off in the Mornings,
with a Buzz-Kill Buzzbait by Culprit it makes a lot of noise. I like my top water baits to make a lot of noise in the summer months on Fayette. Always make sure you have a trailer hook on your buzz baits. Daiichi makes a great trailer hook for those short striking bass.
On Lake Bastrop, I like to use a small clear top water popper or shad type bait with propellers, but remember clear is the trick on this Lake.
As the morning slips into Mid-day, I will back off the banks and work the eight to fifteen foot deep water with a bait such as a stinger, a.k.a. soft stick bait. I will rig this bait in several different ways. Such as wacky style, with a split shot at the head of the bait, or I may even Texas Rig it. I like this bait!! Because it produces a subtle but distinctive action that triggers fish to eat.
As the days get hotter and longer, which they will. I will find myself fishing further out in deeper water, like fifteen to twenty feet deep. Looking for rock piles or humps something the fish can hold on or relate to in deeper water. I like to use the “Carolina Rig” for this type of fishing and my seven foot Rogue Rod and Tica reel so I can throw a big bait a long way like a twelve inch, June bug worm or a tassel lizard, something that has a big profile. When fishing deep water you need a bait that displaces a lot of water so fish can key in on it.
I specifically use Maxima fishing line on all my Rouge rods and Tica reels for longevity
and dependability, the Best by Test.
The water on these power plant lakes will get hot and the fish will stay in the deep water most of the day and return to the shallows at night to feed. I will give some hints on night fishing in the July and August issue of the Texas Outback Magazine.
